Child Health Care – Addiction to Video Games

Addiction or dependency is defined as “mental and physical disease that one needs a certain stimulus to achieve a feeling of well being.” (Vox Dictionary online). When we hear the word addiction, we automatically think about alcohol or drug dependence.

But be careful, because we can have a child addicted to video games at home. The change in our lifestyle and the increase in technology have taken the children to relate more to this kind of pastime, apart from other forms of entertainment and sports, family games and games with friends and others.

In addition, many children use video games as an escape mechanism with difficulties at school or at home thus hindering the proper development of children and to confuse reality with fantasy, especially during the first 5 years of life. How do we know if our son is addicted to video games?

The child appears to be in a trance when he plays, tense, jaw clenched, eyes fixed to the TV, does not respond when called and lose interest in other activities appropriate to their age or who usually practiced and even eat.
